I can add a bit to the line of the Everett McClellan Joy [1862-1938],
husband of Mary J. Pilkerton [1873-1889] listed below as #3-iv.
In the October 1994 issue of the SMCGS "Generator" we published a piece
submitted by SMCGS member Judy Dean Wood of Hollywood, MD. Judy did a two
part series on the descendants of her two ancestors, Miley Jones and James
Joy, co-founders [ca. 1851] of Joy Chapel M. E. Church, now Hollywood United
Methodist Church and Hollywood Church of the Nazarene. The second part was
published in January 1995.
Although Everett M. Joy has the Joy surname, his line actually comes from
Miley Jones, rather than James Joy. Jones was converted at a camp meeting in
Calvert County in 1831. He became a "local preacher" in the Hollywood area.
About 1851, he converted James Joy & family from Catholicism to Methodism.
Actually, Joy was more of a lapsed-Catholic than an active one at the time
of his conversion. Joy opened his home to a Methodist society which
eventually became a preaching point on the St. Mary's Circuit, Baltimore
Conference, Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1868, a wooden chapel was built
on Joy's land; in 1869, he and his wife donated the land to the Baltimore
Conference as the site of a church and a cemetery. Joy's original gift of
land, now expanded, is still the parish cemetery of Hollywood UMC. The
chapel was named for James Joy & family; early names were: Joy's, Joy's
Neighborhood, and finally after 1868, Joy Chapel.
Miley Jones [1805-1868] died only days after the dedication of the church he
co-founded. He is buried right behind the present [1967] Joy Chapel. In
2001, a memorial stone was placed at his grave as part of the 150th
anniversary celebrations. His wife, Permelia Deakins [1803-1868] is buried
next to him.
They had 7 children; one of whom was Ann Permelia [or Permelia Ann] Jones
[1835-1891]. She married 1855 Thomas Franklin Joy [1828-1895]. Both Thomas
Franklin Joy and his wife are buried at Joy Chapel Cemetery, Hollywood.
Thomas and Ann Permelia/Permelia Ann had 8 children:
1. Thomas Owen Joy [1856- ?] Said to be buried at Joy Chapel, but he has no
stone.
2. Edwin F. Joy [1858-1930]
3. Lydia Ann Joy [1860-1886]
4. Everett McClellan Joy [1862-1938]
5. Effice Elice Joy [1864 - ? ] Buried at Patchogue, Suffolk County, L.
I., N. Y.
6. John H. Joy [1867 - ?] Not much is known about him
7. Ella Matilda Joy [1869-1962]
8. Harry Hayes Joy [1877-1970]
#1 Thomas m. 1878 Elizabeth S. Dean; m. 2nd 1885 Estelle Wood. Estelle does
not have a stone, but is said to be a Joy Chapel. Nothing noted on where
Elizabeth might be.
#2 [Edwin], #4 [Everett], & #7 [Harry] are buried at Hollywood Church of
the Nazarene Cemetery, Hollywood. These were among the Joy Chapel people
involved in the "Holiness" movement of the early 1900's. They helped
establish the present Hollywood Nazarene congregation ca. 1905-1907.
Edwin married 1883 Georgeanna Clarke.
Everett had 3 wives. Mary J. Pilkerton [m. 1887]; Florence Ada Gatton [m.
1889]; Annie Maria Dean {1876-1956} [m. 1891]. So, you can see, neither of
Everett's first two wives lived very long after marriage. I don't have any
children listed for either of these marriages, but there well could have
been some. I don't know where either Mary or Florence are buried. Annie is
at the Nazarene Cemetery.
Harry m. 1897 Alice May Dean [1877-1965]. They are also buried at the
Nazarene Cemetery.
#3 [Lydia] and her sister #6 [Ella] were both married to the same man; John
Caleb Dean [1855-1921]. Lydia, Ella, and John are all buried at Joy Chapel.
#6 Effie m. a Great South Bay [Long Island] oysterman named Herbert
Stanislaus Mosher. He was part of a migration of Great South Bay oystermen
to the Chesapeake during the 1870's & 1880's. The family returned to Long
Island; after Effie died, her son came back to Hollywood. Descendants of
this line live in Hollywood. My Norton line in the Town of Brookhaven,
Suffolk County, marries into the Mosher/Moger line in Brookhaven in the
1600's. I assume that the Hollywood Mosher line & I share some common
ancestors in Brookhaven Town back in the 17th century.
Genealogy is always a small world !
If anyone has anything to add on Everett M. Joy's extended family, I would
appreciate receiving it.
Thanks !!!
David
