Ernie,
Very Good question. I have wondered that myself. Webb in his
CENTENARY OF CATHOLICITY IN KY, l p 28, names him as one of the first 25
that came to KY , p 29 he lists the children of Leonard Johnson etc.
The several things that might support this Leonard as the son of David
is the way David's will was written. He stated the following children
one of which was Leonard were not to receive any part of his estate. The
other names can be found in the early Nelson Co. VA/KY tithable and tax
lists.

However.. as far as I know he could be one of the "other Leonard
Johnsons in St. Mary's. He did not name a son "David" or "Peter"
either. My reason for wondering... is... what is found in the tithhable
lists of Nelson co. VA (KY) and then on the tax list. There was a Peter
Johnson who was listed with or rather next to Leonard Johnson.
The lst listing is:
list of tithes taken by Charles Ewing of Capt Charles Reed's Co. on
Pottingers Creek,
July 19th 1788:
Johnston, Lenard 1
Johnston, Peter 1

List of tithable for 1790 Nelson Co. Atkinson Hill in Capt. Masterson &
Willetts Co.
Johnson, Leonard 1
Johnston, Peter 1

List of tithable taken by Atkins Hill for 1791... Capt Ashby's and
Willet's and Masterson's Comps.
Johnston, Peter 1
Johnston, Leonard 1

These two are listed one after the other in the tithable list and also
the tax list for most years up to 1810 tax when a Henry Johnson appears
with the 50 ac that has before been shown for Peter. Am GUESSING
Peter died and Henry was a son as Peter does not appear after 1809.
There is no listing of deed for these 50 ac in the deed abstracts I
have up to 1830. If Peter and Leonard are not listed next to each other
then starting in 1792 they are listed on the watercourse where they
lived and both are ALWAYS listed on Pottinger's Ck., Peter with 50 ac
and Leonard with 250 or 300 it varies.

ABSTRACTS OF DEEDS 1785-1808 NELSON CO., KY Nelson co. Hist. Soc., p 9:
Will Bk 2 p 45 29 July 1788--Charles Ewing and wife Sarah to Leonard
Johnson, 125 lbs, 300 ac on Pottinger's creek. adj Samuel Pottinger.

As I mentioned there is no listing for the 50 ac on Pottinger's Creek
that appears on the tax records for Peter Johnson. But according to the
yearly tax list he did have 50 ac on Pottinger's Cr.

Of course Peter Johnson could have been a cousin or.. ??
