Dear Linda and List,
As far as who the Eleanor was that married John Clark, she is the same
Eleanor who married John Basil Greenwell, because on John Basil Greenwell's
will he lists a stepson Richard Langhorn Clarke, and a step-daughter Jane
Clarke, both children of John Clarke and Eleanor ? and he mentions land that
John Clarke owned called evans Quarter.
Here are a few problems to consider.
John Clarke when he died about 1755 on his inventory had as a witness James
Gough, Which one I don't know, he also had as a witness his brother Abraham
Clarke who married Eleanor Heard sister of the Priscilla Heard who married
James Gough. So I assume The James Gough on John Clarke's inventory was the
same James Gough who married Priscilla Heard.
What we have never proven is if the Eleanor ? who married John Clarke, if
she might be a sister of the James Gough who married Priscilla Heard.
I can't prove it but I believe John Clarke's brother Thomas Clarke married
Susanna Heard also a sister of Priscilla Heard (Gough)
Now Are we saying that the Eleanor ? who married James Wheately is not the
same Eleanor ? who married John Clarke and John Basil Greenwell? Or do we
agree same Eleanor ? married all three men?
John Basil Greenwell and John Clarke were 1st cousins and I'm certain they
married the same Eleanor ?.
If Eleanor Gough daughter of Priscilla Heard and James Gough married, then
who do we agree she might have married? She appears to have married a ?
Greenwell.
is James Wheately a possible husband of Eleanor Gough?, or are we saying
that who ever the Eleanor ? who married John Clarke and John Basil
Greenwell, is also the same Eleanor ? who married James Wheatley?
or are we saying you agree with 1st two marriages but not the last one to
James Wheatley?
Just trying to figure out how many Eleanor's we have in this plausable
scenario.
I currently have the same Eleanor ? married to John Clarke, John Basil
Greenwell, and third to James Wheately.
but I do realize that this Eleanor ? who married these men, was not likely
eleanor Gough daughter of James Gough and Priscilla Heard.
as far as if Susanna Gough daughter of James Gough and Priscilla Heard,
married John Baptist Dant or not, I believe if I'm not forgetting my notes,
that John Baptist Dand and wife Susanna signed as witnesses to her mother
Priscilla Gough's will or Inventory I believe.
I might also add that Joshua Leonard Greenwell a son of John Basil Greenwell
and Eleanor ? followed his half brother Richard Langhorn Clarke to Kentucky,
and he was present when Richard Langhorn Clarke died in Breckinridge County,
KY about 1814.
There is definitely a close relationship, between Clarke and Gough Families.
But I'm saying Eleanor Gough daughter of James Gough and Priscilla Heard, is
married to only a ? Greenwell in my records. I no longer have her married to
John Clarke, John Basil Greenwell, or James Wheately.
I hope we are agreeing on most of the same points.
I might also mention that the Peter Gough who married Eleanor Bowles also
had a daughter Eleanor Gough, who I currently have married to Peter Howard
son of William Howard and Mary Melton, I have Ann Gough their daughter
married to Thomas Howard son of Edward Howard.
I personally believe that Edward Howard must be closely related to Peter
Howard, could they be Brothers? or Cousins?
I just can't believe that Edward Howard is a brother to John Baptist Howard,
maybe an Uncle.
When did Peter Howard die?
Could his wife Eleanor have been the correct age to marry John Clarke?
Just trying to find a possible Eleanor as mother to Richard Langhorn Clarke.

> Good morning,
>
> Mike Gough and I have been recently corresponding about the children of
James Gough and Priscilla Heard. I thought I would share some of this with
the list as there have been a couple of new finds including eliminating
Eleanor, mother of Richard Langhorn Clarke, being one of their daughters.
>
> This from my note to Mike yesterday:
>
> Both the wills of James Gough and Priscilla Heard call their daughter
Eleanor Greenwell.
>
> Eleanor ____who married three times was married to James Wheatley sometime
in 1762 or before. Their son, William Wheatley was baptized at St. Andrew's
on January 8, 1763. This is before both of the Gough wills above. It just
doesn't add up. (Her parents would have called her Eleanor Wheatley).
>
> Eleanor (nee Gough) was still being called Elizabeth Greenwell in her
mother's administration accounts in 1770:
>
> Admin. accts. of Priscilla Gough 8/15/1770; sureties were Bennet Raley and
John Fenwick; legatee was Eleanor Greenwell (dau.); residue to: Elizabeth
Jenkins, Mary Rhodes, James Gough, Ignatius Gough, and Susanna Dante; Exec.,
Mr. James Gough (Skinner).

>
> I agree that Susanna Gough married a Dant, but I don't know that it's
necessarily true that it was John Baptist Dant. She wasn't married at the
time of her father's will in 1764 but she was by 1767 when her mother made
hers.

Elizabeth Gough, daughter of James and Priscilla, was married to WILLIAM
Jenkins, not John Jenkins (per Donnelly). Eleanor Gough, daughter of James
and Priscilla, married JAMES Greenwell. As was the norm, the sons-in-law
have been paid their wives' share of Priscilla's estate.

to--there are several contenders.
