Subject: Robert Harding (d. 1568) of London, ancestor of Richard Edelen (d. 1694/5)
Date: Mon, 1 Nov 2004 19:43:17 -0800 (PST)
Another great-great-grandfather of Richard Edelen (d.
1694/5) of Saint Mary's County was Robert Harding who
died 26 Nov 1568 and requested burial at St
Magnus-the-Martyr near London Bridge.
His IPM also appears in Abstracts of Inquisitiones
Post Mortem for the City of London...Tudor Period Part
II (The British Record Society, Limited; London,
1901), edited by Sidney Madge, on pp 116-117. Also, a
brief biography and an abstract of his will appears on
pp 267-269 of The Genealogist, n.s., v. XVI, edited by
H.W. Forsyth Harwood. Some deeds involving him also
are in the collection of the Worshipful Company of
Salters of London, a guild to which he belonged.
The descent from him to Richard Edelen is as follows:
1. Robert Harding, Citizen and Alderman of London
d. 26 Nov 1568 London
bur. St Magnus-the-Martyr, London
2. Anne Harding [heiress of her brother Simon Harding,
Esq.]

m. to Hugh Offley (d. 1594), Alderman and Shreive of

4. Katherine Offley

m. 28 Dec 1629 Leyton, Essex to Philipp Edelen, Gent.
(ca. 1598-1656), of London and Denham,
Buckinghamshire. He was admitted a pensioner 1614 at
Emmanuel College, Cambridge; and incorporated at
Oxford in 1617. Received B.A. 1618, M.A. 1621, and
B.D. 1628. Ordained a minister of Church of England
1622. Served as rector of North Cray, Kent;
Alverstoke, Hampshire; St John Zachary, London;
Bushey, Hertfordshire; St Michael Bassishaw, London;
and Denham, Buckinghamshire. His MI at St Mary's,
Denham reads:
"Here lyeth Philippe Edelen, a man of rare endowments,
singular integrity, holy Conversation and a most
prudent solide and constant preacher of Truth in the
most difficult times wherein he lived, continuing
unmoved in the principles he had first layd and dying
a true sonne of the Church of England, March 22nd,
1656 and of his age 58."
5. Richard Edelen (d. 1694/5) of St Andrew Undershaft
Parish, London and Saint Mary's County, Maryland.
I hope this is of interest, especially the information
on Robert Harding, to Edelen descendants, of which I
am one.
