St. Mary's Larger Parish [Methodist]
Address: St. Mary's County
MD
Other Information:
St. Mary's Larger Parish was created in 1942 by the former all-black Washington Conference of The Methodist Church. In the words of a history published in 1967, "Our Methodist Churches in St. Mary's County, prior to the organization of the larger parish, were very much isolated. They were like fingers on the hand working separately, but accomplishing very little. But after organizing them into a parish, these churches became fingers working together on the hand with greater strength and unity." The Larger Parish served St. Mary's County African-American community for over 25 years. It was abolished in 1969 and the individual churches were made station churches or placed on smaller charges, some with white churches. The churches in the Larger Parish in 1942 were: Zion, Bethesda, St. Luke's, Galilee, John Wesley, Mt. Calvary, and Mt. Zion. John Wesley was closed in the early 1950's; Galilee was closed in 1983. The others exist today.
