Charley, sorry to be so tardy in answering your posting, but I have been so
busy trying to shovel the lumps of coal out from under the Christmas tree,
to say nothing of all those dab blasted switches that Santa left there, I
have been unable to answer e-mail.
My Cezar line is remarkably unsourced. Cezar Mattingly b c.1661 was another
one of those Mattinglys in the witness protection program, I think. Here is
about all I have in the way of sources on Cezar, my research and that of
others.

I have that Cezar "Caesar/Cesar" Mattingly, s/o Thomas I, m. Jane Suttle
(src: Linda Reno) and had son John Mattingly b c 1690 who m/1 Unknown before
1715 and m/2 Grace Brewer after 1722. Grace (Brewer) Mattingly m/2 Peter
Johnson. Cezar and Jane may have had additional children: Thomas, Mark, and
some say Samuel, Clement, James and Hope, but I do not have records to
verify these children. Maybe others can provide more to prove or disprove
their lineage. Judith

Msgr Herman E. Mattingly gives Cezar two sons, Thomas b 1688 & John b 1690.
His reasoning was that Thomas II' s son, Thomas, was born after 1692, and
not old enough to be the Thomas who made a deposition. However, we now have
Thomas II with two daughters born before 1682 and married by 1698. This
allows plenty of time for a son, Thomas III to be born 1688. There are many
records for Thomas III and no known records for Thomas son of Cezar.

------------------------------

This probably has no relevence whatsoever, but I found an entry in the Court
Proceedings of MD as follows:

20 Sep 1718. St. Mary's Co. Depositin of Thomas Warren, age ca. 40, that
he heard Cezar Mattingsly's wife say that she heard her mother say that she
wished the land called St. Lawrence then purchased by John Greaves might not
predudice John Sattle, her brother. (Liber CL, p. 468).

This entry is written just above the court deposition that Cezar, ca age 64
gives regarding the location of the above land, St. Lawrence.

Interestingly, a piece of land called St. Laurence was once owned by Walter
Pake, the stepfather of Cezar and Thomas II.

I'm not entirely certain what this means and I can't figure out if John
Sattle was Cezar's wife's brother or Cezar's, wife's uncle. I also don't
know if this John Sattle is John Suttle or not. I know that John Suttle,
Thomas' wife's deceased husband/father died in 1680 but there is a John
Suttle who owned part of Suttle's Rest in 1705 along with a William
Mattingly. Either way, it would appear that both Thomas and Cezar could
have married into the Suttle family.

Anway, there certainly seems to be a connection between the early Mattingly
family and the Suttles.
