Every name mention in every article was indexed. That was the scope of the indexing project that I worked on 1991-1993; plus a volunteered to finishin things up into early 1994.
If a person was mentioned, his/her name was indexed.

My GUESS on the first article was NATIONAL; discussing views of the various denominations on slave membership, since there was no Baptist, Presbyterian, or Christian churches in St. Mary's County in 1858. This was most likely copied from a major paper. VERY LITTLE national news showed up in the "Beacon" other than what they copied from New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and other large city papers.
