St. Thomas Chapel, St. George Island
St. Thomas was a Chapel of Ease connected with St. George's [Poplar Hill] Episcopal Church, William & Mary Parish. The records for St. Thomas are included in "register A" of St. George's. St. Thomas Chapel was built on St. George Island in 1896.
From an account published Wednesday, June 14, 1899: "St. Thomas Chapel St. George's Island was consecrated this day by the Rt. Reverend Henry Yates Satterlee DD. Bishop of the Diocese of Washington. The Rev. Messer H. Vaughan, Rector of William and Mary Parish and the Rev. Mr. Hayes of St. Mark's ________ Cathedral Washington were present. The congregation was large. Morning Prayer was read by the Rector. The lessons were read by the Rev. Mr. Hayes. Holy Communion was administered to 8 persons, all except 1 being from the parish. Cash of the Chapel $1600, Furniture $300. Both cash and Furniture were given primarily by Churches and persons in Washington and Baltimore although many persons on St. George's Island and some on the mainland gave as they were able. Mr. H. Vaughan, Rector"
The chapel was apparently located on the property of the Adams family on the Island. It is not known how many years the chapel was actually in use. From a note in the records for April 13, 1925: "The new vestry resolved that Mr. Herman Hewett be authorized to sell the church building on St. George Island for the minimum sum of $300."
Another record for November 10, 1925 shows: - Piney Point - "Mr. Bradburn to see to repair of St. Thomases Chapel on Island and report as to roof at next meeting" "Resolved that we pay 1/2 $25 rent for Dr. Van Fossen and that Dr. Whitmore confer and report.
The chapel apparently sat empty for many years as a St. George's Island resident who was born in the 1930s remembers playing in the building when he was a child.
There were burials at the Chapel. Three are listed in St. George's register Mrs. John Bland, d. 30 March 1899; John Bland d. 7 January 1901; Mrs. Ed Sayer d. 7 January 1901. They story goes that when the chapel was finally sold and moved these graves were moved to St. George's cemetery but they were not marked.
