Hi Judith and List,

Thanks for the vote of confidence, but the third sentence was also missing a
"MIGHT" and I must have changed my mind about Margaret being a Taylor since
that time. The only clue I can find is that Thomas and Ann Edwards were
listed as NOK of William Birchmore in 1761.

4/18/1761: Admin. accts. of William Birchmore, SMC. NOK: Thomas and Ann
Edwards. Exec.: Wife, Margaret.

I don't have parents for the Thomas Edwards listed, but I have his wife Ann
as Ann Cissell, daughter of William Cissell and first wife, Mary or
Catherine Joyner.

Will of William Cissell, planter, SMC 6/22/1742-11/28/1744. Children:
Arthur, Luke, Margaret (Thompson), Ann (Edwards), Matthew, Elizabeth (wife
of Charles Payne), Clare (Barton). Grandchildren: William Cissell (son of
John and his mother Elizabeth Neale); William Cissell (son of Wm. and Clara,
his wife). Granddaughter: Eleanor (dau. of son Arthur), land between
Arthur's plantation and the plantation where John Harden now lives. Son:
Arthur, plantation he now lives on, pt. of 100 ac. called "Scotland". Son:
Luke, other pt. of "Scotland", 50 ac. it being obtained by judgement in
chancery by Daniel Dulany. Daughter: Margaret Thompson, the plantation she
now lives on. Mentions John Thompson, Charles Neale, and Charles Payne.
Daughter: Ann Edwards, the plantation she now lives on. Son: Matthew, 50
ac. pt. of "White Acre", the plantation he lives on, given me by my father's
will and 20 ac. called "Cissell's Improvements". To: William Cissell, son
of William and Clare, his wife, 1 shilling. To: Elizabeth, wife of Charles
Payne, land between William Cissell's and Ann Edwards' land and deeded from
her brother William Cissell's land. Daughter: Clare Barton, 1 ac. now in
the possession of William Cissell, son of John. To: Neall (sic) wife of
Charles Neale, access to William Cissell's land. Execs: Arthur Cissell,
Luke Cissell, Matthew Cissell, Edward Cissell, Margaret Thompson. Wit:
Catherine Russell, Margaret Pye, William Russell. (Maryland Calendar of
Wills).

If William Birchmore is the same man who was sent here as a convict, then I
would say the connection between Ann (Cissell) Edwards and he would have to
be via marriage and not blood and it would be via Ann Cissell, otherwise why
would her name have been mentioned at all?

Here's my notes on him:

William Birchmore, baptized 1/15/1717 at Chalgrave, Bedford, England. Son
of John Birchmore and Ann___. (Latter Day Church Records). I believe this
is the right one. There were a few others, but none were in the right
timeframe.

Immigration and Naturalization Records list William Burchmore as being
transported to Maryland 1739-1740. He appears to have been a convicted
felon. "A list of convicts transported to Maryland" (Maryland Historical
Magazine, Vol. 43: 1 (March, 1948), p. 55-60. Surname spelled both ways and
there is only one William in same timeframe, so it is the same person.

Birch, alias Birchman, alias Burchmore, William. Sentenced to
transportation, December 1739. Transported 1740. York. Middlesex. (From
"Emigrants in Bondage", The Complete Book of Emigrants, 1607-1776). CD
#350.
