Hi folks! I just got back from vacation. I think that Elizabeth
Guibert, daughter of Joshua Guibert II and Ann Boarman did marry Thomas
Jones (although he may have been Thomas Janes). I did a lot of research
while on vacation and let me list my ideas:
1) The idea that Elizabeth Guibert (daughter not of Joshua Guibert II
but, instead, of his brother, Thomas Guibert (d. 1728-29) and Sarah
(Jordan?))married (1) James Neale (d. 1761--son of Benjamin Neale and
Mary Edelen)and (2) his brother, Gerard Neale (who, himself, married (2)
Ann Pye), seems to have originated in the 1960's with Harry Wright
Newman (in his Semmes and Kindred Families book (which I have)).
However, Newman did not give any documentation for this theory.
2) If you look at the Sureties for the Administration Bond of Elizabeth
_______ Neale (Widow of the James Neale who died in 1761--the same woman
who married (2) Gerard Neale), they are in no way connected to the
Guibert family. This is telling.
3) The Elizabeth Guibert who married the James Neale (d. 1753) who was
the son of Roswell Neale and (his second wife) Elizabeth Blackistone,
was, I am convinced, the Elizabeth Guibert who was the daughter of
Thomas Guibert (d. 1728-29) and Sarah (possibly Jordan).
4) When James Neale, his wife, Elizabeth (Guibert) Neale, and Ann
Guibert (the other daughter of Thomas Guibert and Sarah (Jordan?)) made
an agreement (in 1743) about the division of the offspring of slaves
left by Thomas Guibert (d. 1728-29) to the two girls, the witnesses to
the agreement were Robert Yates and James Jordan.
5) Robert Yates also administered the Estate of James Neale (d.
1753--son of Roswell Neale and Elizabeth Blackistone). This is somewhat
compelling circumstantial evidence that the Elizabeth Guibert who
married James Neale (d. 1753) was the one who was the daughter of Thomas
Guibert (d. 1728-29) and Sarah (Jordan?).
6) My ancestor, James Neale (b. circa 1750 and d. circa 1810--he married
Mary Gibson and would have been the son of James Neale (d. 1753) and
Elizabeth Guibert) also had a son named "Thomas G. Neale." We have
speculated as to whether or not his name was actually "Thomas Guibert
Neale."
7) At this point, I am pretty sure that (a) after the death of Thomas
Guibert (d. 1728-29), Sarah (Jordan?) Guibert ended up marrying Robert
Yates and died circa 1775 in Charles County, MD, as Sarah Yates.
Interestingly, in her Will, Sarah (Jordan?) Guibert (?) Yates mentions a
grand-daughter, "Sarah Muir." Doctor William Muir (who was born in
Scotland, lived in SMC, and ended up dying in Kentucky) married (1)
Sarah "Sally" Neale and (2) Elizabeth Locke. Until proven otherwise, I
am saying that James Neale (d. 1753--son of Roswell Neale and Elizabeth
Blackistone) and Elizabeth Guibert (daughter of Thomas Guibert (d.
1728-29) and Sarah (Jordan?)) had, at least, a son, James Neale (d.
circa 1810--he married Mary Gibson) and a daughter, Sarah ("Sally")
Neale who married (as his first wife) Doctor William Muir. Sarah
("Sally") (Neale) Muir died circa 1778.
8) I think that, way back in the 1960's, Harry Wright Newman had to come
up with a James Neale who married (before 1743) Elizabeth Guibert
(daughter of Thomas Guibert (d. 1728-29) and Sarah (Jordan?) and,
basically, pulled James Neale (d. 1761--son of Benjamin Neale and Mary
Edelen) "out of the hat." Heaven knows, we've all done the same thing
at one time or another.
I know this is controversial. Feedback welcome. Thanks! John Dobricky
