Might anyone be familiar with the SUMMERS Family?

GEORGE SMITH SUMMERS m. Elizabeth Cissell (d/o Augustine C. and Mary Frances
Hammet Cissell) on 8 June 1818 in Washington Co., KY. The family saga tells
that he was into the distillery business and was seeking out an area with
"limestone and good spring water" when he met Elizabeth. Elizabeth had been
married before to John Newman. John Newman died and Elizabeth lost the child
she was prenant with due to the grief of his death! Very sad tale. Frankly,
I have a very soft spot in my heart for Elizabeth Cissell and hope to liearn
more of George Smith SUMMERS.

GEORGE SMITH SUMMERS was born bet.1750-1795 {far too wide a period in my
mind!} possibly in Maryland (yes ,yes I know! No firm proof). Family
tradition has him in Davis Co., Ky by the fall of 1816. He did some farming
(corn, pigs, tobaco) and rafted down to Memphis once a year to sell his
goods. Supposedly he also got into the whiskey or burbon business.

The following story was told to me by my late grandfather James Earl Evans
in an interview on 2/3/1999. My Grandfather was know to "fill in the blanks"
when he was uncertain of deals so not all of this report may be true.

"Beth, Joseph used to tell me, George came from Germany. They come up the
Ohio River in the fall of the year. There was no dams and locks on the river
then. When they'd got to Owensboro ( Daviess Co., KY) there was just a big
pool o' water. They set up a whiskey distillery and had the Indians workin'
for 'em. Once a year they'd build a flat boat and go down the Ohio River to
the Mississippi River. They'd take their whiskey and bacon and hams, 'cause
they raised hogs. They'd sell all that in Memphis, Tenn. Then they'd sell
the logs they used to make their boat, hire an Indian guide and walk all the
way back to Owensboro. They'd take a horse sometimes when they could build a
boat big enough."

They had 12 children, 7 were boys, according to THE SUMMERS OF MARYLAND AND
KENTUCKY. George Smith SUMMERS also donated money for the building of St.
Gregory's church in Samuels, KY

Thank you for your time and assistance,

Mary Beth
