The SMCGS recently received a copy of the new book "The Ark and the Dove Adventurers" ed. by George Ely Russell & Donna Valley Russell. I will be writing a review for the Spring 2006 "Generator."

I thought I might focus in, as an example of what's in the book, on the family of Eleanor Calvert [ca. 1753 -1831]. Her first husband was John [Jackie] Parke Custis [1753-1781], son of Martha Washington by her first husband & step-son of George Washington. Eleanor is the mother among others of George Washington Parke Custis, who in time builds "Arlington House," now the Custis-Lee Mansion in Arlington National Cemetery. Eleanor's grand-daughter, G. W. P. Custis's daughter, was the wife of Robert E. Lee.

But as I was looking at this Lee-Custis-Washington connection to the Lords Baltimore, I can across a problem in the book. I am sure the answer is sitting right in the book, but I can't find it.

Eleanor Calvert is #69 in the book [p. 8]. Her father is #51 Benedict Calvert [ca. 1724 - 1788]. So far, OK. Her mother is Elizabeth Calvert [1730 - 1798]. Elizabeth's parents are listed as "Charles and Rebecca (Gerard) Calvert." According to the book, the marriage of Benedict and Elizabeth says that Elizabeth was the "only surving daughter of the late Hon. Charles Calvert, deceased, formerly Governor of the Province."

Well as the former Governor, it sure sounds like this Charles would be in the Calvert line from George Calvert, First Lord Baltimore. But, he doesn't show up in this book - or I can't find him.

What does anyone know about this Charles Calvert ? This Charles would be the grandfather of Eleanor Calvert, wife of Jackie Custis, great-grandfather of George Washington Parke Custis, and great-great-grandfather of Mrs. Robert E. Lee.

Thanks !

David
