While researching my Montgomery County, Maryland ancestors I came upon the following article, I thought I'd pass it on to the list. It is from the newspaper THE MONTGOMERY COUNTY SENTINEL, dated January 1860 and I've copied it as is.
I hope it helps someone on the list.

The Montgomery County Sentinel
Rockville, Montgomery Co., MD
Friday January 20, 1860
HEAVY PURCHASES. --- We learn from
the Leonard Town Beacon, that the real
estate and negroes of Wm. H. Hebb,
Esq., in St. Mary's county, have been
purchased by Capt. Joseph H. Maddox,
of Leonard Town, at private sale. The
purchase includes 280 acres of land and
thirty-three negroes, and the amount of
the purchase reaches near $44,000.---
The Beacon adds: In addition to the
above, we learn that Capt. Maddox, on
Tuesday last, purchased "Cintre," [ad
joining his estate in Medley's Neck] of
B.L. Hayden, Esq.; for $12,500. This
makes over $100,000 that this gentleman
has invested in real and personal estate
in this county within the past twelve
months.
