Hello all. I just signed on to this listserve so forgive my repeat of
questions that may already of been asked and answered a hundred times
already. Forgive me as well should I not be following proper protocol
as it has been some time since I participated in a listserve.
I am in search of further details related to my grand father George
Keith b. 1625/26 d. 1735/37. I have quite a bit of details with my
primary goal to affirm my speculation on the family connection in
Scotland. I am interested in any further details anyone may of
uncovered along with any advise on particular archives and records
worthy of further research either in St. Mary's or Annapolis at the
Archives.
Here is what I have so far:
1. Scot Origins search turned up a George Keith, son of Robert and
Isobell (Jack) Keith with a christening date of 1628 in Aberdeen. Of
all other George Keith's this comes the closest to my George Keith.
2. He shows up again in the court proceeding records of St. Clement's
Manor Court on Thursday, September the 8th, 1770. He is listed as a
resident of the manor. The author indicates residents had no land
ownership. I am curious as to what function/service he may of served
the manor. Indentured servant as his wife Dorothy (which I already have
record of)? Or some other role and purpose?
3. Dorothy his wife as I indicated was an indentured servant to Captain
Luke Gardiner, one of those to cross over on the Ark and the Dove. In
the court record listing George Keith I find Luke Gardiner as well.
Gardiner is listed as a freeholder. Could both George and Dorothy both
be indentured servants to Gardiner?
3. As George Keith II was born in Scotland in 1667 this means George I
transported to Maryland between 1667-1770 along with his wife Dorothy.
Again, in possible indentured service to Luke Gardiner as a family? I
understand through J. Hall Pleasants preface to the court proceedings
that a small percentage of indentured servants were brought over for
their craft and skill of service and not all were common laborers. In
that George Keith is listed as part of the court proceedings could this
indicate he was more than a common laborer?
4. The two children I have record of on George and Dorothy are as I
said, George Keith II 1667 Scotland - 1705 St. Mary's County. And Sarah
a daughter. I have records forward from these on to the present.
Generations moving from Maryland to Kentucky to Indiana.
Thank you.
David Keith
