Hello. The idea that Phillip Tippett II (d. 1736) married a daughter of
John Hilton came from his deposition in 1711 that the farm "Gardiner's
Landing" was on the boundary of the farm "Bookford" as told him by his
"father-in-law," John Hilton.

I think the mistake came from forgetting that, in the early 18th
century, the term "father-in-law" was also used to mean (in today's
terminology) "step-father."

I think that the mother of Philip Tippett II (d. 1736) married (2) John
Hilton. If so, his mother was not Mary (Suttle) Tippett because she
married (2) Thomas Rabling I.

I have thought for a while now that all of the Tippetts living in SMC in
the early 18th century were not children of Phillip Tippett I (d. 1706).
In fact, the Estate documents of Phillip Tippett I don't list any
children.

There were a bunch of Tippetts living in Virginia--and at least a John
Tippett living in Maryland--in the 17th century. I can provide a list
of these if you would like.

Like I said, the early Tippetts have never been comprehensively
researched. John Dobricky

As you'll note, the will of John Hilton only names two sons. He gives
half of his estate to his wife, Jane and the other half to the boys. If
he'd had daughters, he wouldn't have precluded them in this way. The
administration accounts of John Hilton show Philip and Thomas Tippett as
two of the three "approvers" of the estate. This doesn't mean they
married his daughters or that they were, in fact, even related to him.
They could have been approvers because they owed him money. The three
could have been relatives of Jane, the widow.

Will of John Hilton, SMC, 11/26/1697-1/21/1705. Wife: Jane, Exec., 1/2
of estate. Sons: John and Francis, residue of estate. Wit: John
Sharly, Arabella Holt, and Christian Flowers. (Maryland Calendar of
Wills).

Admin. accts. of Mr. John Hilton, 3/1/1716; approvers were Samuel
Williams, Philip Tippett and Thomas Tippett (Skinner).
