Thank you so much. However my silly work is nothing next to yours.

It appears that you Private A. J. Mann would have been held at the military
Prison in Louisville , Ky. it served as a sort of "clearing house" for
enlisted men and non commissioned officers who were Union prisoners. Under
the terms of the Dix-Hill men were exchanged "in a timely fashion." The Dix
Hill Cartel broke down in July of 1863. After this, prisoner of war camps
on both sides became horribly over crowded and illness was common place due
to unsanitary conditions. In the Spring of 1865 with the war grinding down,
"humanitarian exchanges" of sick and disabled prisoners were made. I do know
that Boulwares Wharf was a location for these exchanges.

I strongly suggest inquiring with the State of Mississippi regarding service
records of Private Mann and his brother. I was able to obtain the full
service records of both of the Evan boys from the State Archives in
Frankfort. The service records will offer you an excellent starting point.
Some but not all of the Boulwares Wharf exchange records were lost during
the fall of the Confederate capitol

You may also wish to look for organizations which preserve the memory of
the 17th Regiment Mississippi Infantry. Letters written by members of
Company B will offer you valuable insight and clues to your ancestors
military life. First hand accounts of battle are a bit hard to stomach but
offer clear detail of what these men endured.

Warmly,
MB
