If this soldier was born in St. Mary's County, Maryland why do you think his
parents were from North Carolina? On what basis did you decide he was the
son of Ambrose Jones and Catherine Collins?

I pulled the pension record of Stephen Jones and he does specifically state
that he was born in St. Mary's County on August 19, 1750. But I noticed
something else. He said that while residing in Granville County, NC he
volunteered in 1779 and served three months in Capt. Richard Cook's Company.
This is Capt. Richard Donaldson Cooke (1734-1811), a native of St. Mary's
County who moved to Granville Co., NC before 1773. He was the son of Dr.
Richard Cooke and Mary Magdalene Donaldson (daughter of Rev. John
Donaldson). My reaction has to be that Stephen Jones' family probably moved
to Granville County about the same time as the Cookes.

Capt. Richard Donaldson Cooke married first, Priscilla Bullock, daughter of
James Bullock and his wife, Sarah, also from St. Mary's County and they too
moved to Granville County about 1768. His second wife was Elizabeth Locke,
also from St. Mary's County, daughter of Meverell Locke and Elizabeth
Edwards.

Aside from the Bullocks and the Cookes, there was also the family of Aaron
Stacey. He was the son of Bennet Stacey, born in St. Mary's County and died
in Lincoln Co., NC who married Sarah Hoskins, also of St. Mary's. This
family moved first to Brunswick Co., VA by about 1771, but were in Granville
County well before 1778. Aaron Stacey married Nancy Bullock, sister of
Priscilla Bullock.

I think my suggestion would be for you to look through deeds, etc., for
folks with the surname Jones associating with any of the surnames above from
1768-1776. If you get anything promising, let me know.
