Leonardtown is named for EITHER [pick your source]
a. Leonard Calvert [brother of Cecil Calvert]
b. Benedict Leonard Calvert [one of the 18th century Lords Baltimore].
Traditionally, it's said to be for the original Leonard; but, I'm not so
sure it wasn't named for Benedict Leonard. When the town was established in
the early 18th century it was Seymourtown; after Governor Seymour, a royal
governor of Maryland during the period in which Maryland was ruled directly
by the Crown; after the Roman Catholic Calverts lost the colony & before
later Calvert converted to Anglicanism & got the colony back.
Leonard Hall was named in the early 20th century either for Leonard Calvert,
I believe, or for Leonardtown, itself. The "Hall" part is the common name
for a school ... you see this in Charlotte Hall or in the famous Nassau Hall
in New Jersey [now Princeton].
