oops,
Yes, my brain ran out toward the end. Most of the godparents I have seen listed had some relationship to the child. (aunt, uncle, cousin- but not always) Then I got to reading and posting and forgot what data I was looking at. Getting old I guess...
The post should have said:
pg 137 Baptisms cont'd for year 1776 Example of negro birth
23 Sep nig Athan. and Ann Ford
gp: John Ford and Mary Mills *
* Not sure how to read this. I assume Athan and Ann Ford were the white owners and the godparents were parish members John Ford and Mary Mills or are these Negro names who happen to have the same names as their owners?
Then: Is there any family relationship between any of these sponsors or did they just step forward as parish members?
pg 141 Baptisms cont'd for year 1778
25 Oct Sarah Basil and Eleanor Heard
gp: Ignatius Mills and Eleanor Nottingham
p118 Baptisms cont'd for 1770
16 Dec James James and Eleanor Greenwell
gp: John Miles and Mary An Dant
pg 132 Baptisms cont'd from 1774
7 Aug James Justinian and Mary Mills
gp: Charles Dant and Ann Greenwood (should this be Greenwell?)
I have this as a new child for Justinian and Mary who may have died young or can one of the later James Mills' now be assigned to Justinian and living elsewhere?
James is not mentioned later in Justinian or Mary's will.
** Was Charles related to Mary DANT Mills?

Edwin Beitzell's "The Jesuit Missions of St. Mary's County" summarizes many of the parish records of early St. Mary's Co.
I am posting my comments and questions on the Mills for this reference.
pg 76.
Baptisms for 1786 cont'd
31 Dec Mary William and Monica Clark
gp: Henry Goodrum and Ann Mills
*Does anyone know which Ann Mills this was or who her parents were?
pg 102. Father George Hunter, S.J. recorded in 1765 theat there were 3 missionaries, 29 negroes on the plantation in Newton. The names of Jesuits considered laymen were recorded.
pg 102 1766 lists a Widow Mills**, on the same list is "Josue". She is listed again in 1788 on pg 106 (Or this is another Widow Mills)
**Could this be Peter Mills' widow? (Peter Mills III d. 1762, son of (Peter Mills, Jr and Margaret) His brother William d. 1750. Peter Mills III had two sons Joshua and William.
pg 103 A Clem. Mills dies a violent death- stabd in 1769.
pg 106 mentions Lydia Mills in 1793 and again as "Luddy" Mills? in 1796 on pg 107.
Who is this Mills?
p118 Baptisms cont'd for 1770
16 Dec James James and Eleanor Greenwell
gp: John Miles and Mary An Dant ***
*** How do I read this relationship between Miles/Dant and Greenwell?
pg 119 Baptisms cont'd for 1771
14 Apr Susan Nicolas and Anastasia Mills
gp: Nic. Greenwell and Mary. An ditto
This is proof that Nicholas III married first Anastasia Greenwell and Susanna was not a dau. of Winifred his second wife. Who were Mary An 's parents, wife of Nic. Greenwell?
pg 126 Baptisms in year 1773
8 Feb Edmund John and Ann Greenwell
gp: Joseph Mills and Ann Greenwell.
Who is this Joseph Mills? Could he be a un-named son from the will of Nicholas, Jr.
pg 132 Baptisms cont'd from 1774
7 Aug James Justinian and Mary Mills
gp: Charles Dant and Ann Greenwood (should this be Greenwell?)
pg 137 Baptisms cont'd for year 1776 Example of negro birth
23 Sep nig Athan. and Ann Ford
gp: John Ford and Mary Mills
Not sure how to read this. I assume Athan and Ann Ford were the white owners and the grandparents were their parents? Or are these the names of their negro parents and grandparents?
pg 136 Baptisms cont'd for year 1776
1 Sep Peter Jesse and Mary Mills
gp: Jesse and Mary Mills "brother and sister Maria"*
* How to interpret this comment?
pg 141 Baptisms cont'd for year 1778
25 Oct Sarah Basil and Eleanor Heard
gp: Ignatius Mills and Eleanor Nottingham
Does this mean Eleanor's parents were Ign. and Eleanor? or Basil's mother was a Nottingham? I only have one Ignatius of this time period and no child named Eleanor?
pg 145 Marriages from year 1777
3 Nov 1777 Robt. Abell and Margarita Miles
