ccording to "Pioneer History of Washington County" Wm. Bolds was a Rev.

his info came from a newspaper clipping, History of Washington County,
y O.W. Baylor, 14 Mar 1935.
778 -- Wm. Boulds and Ignatius Bowles took an oath of allegience to the
ew state of Maryland, as required by law. (Have copy of oath; from
atholic Families of Eastern MD., O'Rourke.)
785 -- (From Catholicity in Kentucky): a "league" of 60 Catholic
amilies (Maryland Land League), most from St. Mary's Co., MD, formed and
ledged to emigrate to KY. 25 families left in early 1785, reached KY by
pring. Settled in Pottiner's Creek lands. Three brothers, Ignatius,
illiam and John Bowles included. "The Bowles brothers, Ignatius, John
nd William, were upright and pious men, and greatly respected in the
ommunity." Interesting note: "It is a singular circumstance in the
istory of Catholic emigration to Kentucky, that the first colony of
migrants should have settled on lands that were, possibly, the least
nviting of any to be found in all Central Kentucky." Probably because of
nscrupulous speculators in Maryland who held the patents.
786 -- Shows up on Nelson Co., VA (now KY) tithables list. (Also 1788,
790, Cpt. John Caldwell's Company, and 1791, with a negro named
harles.)
12 Sep 1788, the Court "ordered that Bazell Hayden John

lack; 4 horses, 23 cattle, 115 acres. And 1795: Boulds, William, 1 white
ale over 21, 4 horses, 15 cattle, 115 acres on Beech Fork.

aters of Pottinger's Creek. Wash. Co. Deed Book B, p. 120. Holy Cross
atholic Church, FIRST CATHOLIC CHURCH IN KENTUCKY. Church built in 1792.
Note that Catholicity book incorrectly calls William Bolds "William
ald.")
2 Feb 1817 -- Buys land on Pottinger's Creek from Jacob Dupner for 100
ounds. (Actually paid May 1814). (Book E, p. 330)
Pioneer History..." note: "To the names of soldiers of the American

Gayle,
If you're correct on the godparents, my guess would be that this William
Bowles was the son of John Bowles, Jr. and wife, Susanna. Ann (Gough)
Howard was William's 1st cousin, and if I've got the right William she was
also his sister-in-law as, Ignatius Bowles, brother of this William,
married
Catherine Gough, Ann's sister.
Would this be the William Bowles who died 1839 in Washington Co., KY? His
wife's name wasn't given in his will. I have his wife as Mary Cissell
with
no notes at all.

I'm sorry if this has been answered before. If so, I missed it.
The following is in the book "Catholic Families of Southern Maryland", in
the listing of Baptisms at St. Francis Xavier & St. Inigoes.
14 Mar 1779 - ______ Bowles of William and Catherine - Thomas and Ann
Howard
I think the godparents were:
Thomas Howard (born about 1737 St. Mary's, Maryland - died between 28
May-24
Nov 1810 Nelson, Kentucky), son of Edward Howard, and his wife,
Ann Gough Howard (born 1738 St. Mary's, Maryland-died 9 Mar 1836 Nelson ,
Kentucky), daughter of Peter Gough and Eleanor Bowles.
Questions: Is this William Bowles related to Ann Gough? How? Who were the
parents of William Bowles? Who was his wife Catherine?
Thank you,
Gayle Howard Londeree
