History of Western Maryland, Volume 2, by J. Thomas Scharf, page 1289 The
Conococheague District was one of the earliest settled in the county, and
contained a portion of Lord Baltimore's reserved lands and manors. On
November 9, 1767, the commissioners, empowered by him, offered these lands
for sale at the home of Col. Thomas Prather, in Frederick County.
Conococheague Manor contained over eleven thousand acres. The ancestors of
the immortal author of "The Star Spangled Banner" were residents of
Conococheague District. Among other early residents were Henry Ankeny and
John McClain, who lived on the west side of Conococheague Creek, eight miles
from Hagerstown. This district borders on the Pennsylvania line to the
north, on the east is East Hagerstown District, on the southeast West
Hagerstown District, and on the west Clear Spring District, from which it is
separated by the Conococheague Creek. The surface of the land in the
Conococheague District is generally rolling with very good productive farm
land.
