I am researching the WISSINGER surname. Various spellings of the surname can
be found including WISINGER, WISENGER, WESSINGER, WIESINGER, WEISINGER and
others. Johann Ludwig Wissinger (1703-1779) settled in or near Middletown,
Frederick Co., Md. between 1747-1750. He married a Catharine UNK in 1742 and
they had ten children. Johann Ludwig and Catherine were of the Protestant
faith and in 1750, Johann and his friends built a crude log structure for
their church. This building was used by the Lutheran and Reformed
congregations until 1783 when the group disbanded. In 1771, the Lutherans
purchased an acre of land from Conrad Crone and in 1773, they built a
sexangular log structure for their church. This building was used until 1814
at which time they built a brick structure replacing it in 1859 with a
larger brick structure, which is still standing, and in use today. This
building was also used by the government as a lookout and hospital during
the Civil War. A few records of this family have been found at the Lutheran
Congregation of Zion Church in Middletown.

Pat,
One of my relatives married into almost every family that lived in MD. They
built and took over the Hager House for none payment by the Hager family (on
record in city hall and in the Miller house records, and sold it to the city
for next to nothing after 150 years, to make it a park. I will be going back
this coming fall for looking into more of the history of family farms on the
battle grounds around there. I have a story of part of the family moving to
OH and then to IN and settling in Evanston ILL. After the black hawk wars.
