Subject: [MDWASHIN-L] Anna Sheller, wife of John Welty
Date: Wed, 25 Jul 2001 14:41:22 EDT

Anna Sheller, stated as the wife of John Welty on her tombstone, is buried at
Adeline United Brethren Cemetery, Adeline, Ogle Co. IL. Died Sept. 29, 1872,
age 90 yrs, 8 mo. 29d. [cemetery index lists her as Emma Welty, but the
stone indeed says Anna. She is buried next to the William Baker family
stone, which says Wm. Baker was born in Washington Co MD Apr 20, 1819; died
in Adeline, Ogle Co IL Apr 11, 1912. His wife was Lydia Welty Baker, born in
Washington Co MD Mar 2, 1821; daughter of John and Annie Sheller Welty.
Lydia Welty Baker died in Adeline, Ogle Co IL Feb 17, 1902.

William Baker first went to Ogle Co with James Coffman in 1840, driving a
four horse team. He stayed two years, then returned to Washington Co MD
where he married Lydia Welty Sept. 1842. They went back to Ogle Co IL about
1843.

The mother [Anna Sheller Welty] died at the home [Adeline] of her daughter
[Lydia] at the age of 91 years; Lydia's father, John Welty, died in Washingtn
Co MD aged 67 years. [source: Portrait and Biographical Album of Ogle Co,
1886]
The 1860 federal census, Ogle Co IL, listing for William Baker family
includes Anna Welty, age 78, born in PA. Also includes Phillip SHOUSE [see
below], farm laborer.

Children of Anna Sheller and John Welty presumably include:
1. Elizabeth Welty, b. abt Jan 22, 1801; married John Palmer. [source:
note from an aunt, now deceased, which refers to her gg grandmother Welty
buried at Adeline]

2. Mary Welty, b. abt. Nov 1816; married John Shouse; died Sept 7, 1863.
[SOURCES:]
- letter from John Welty, dated Dec. 17, 1835, acknowledging an advance
legacy to his daughter Mary upon her "intermarrage" with John, Shouse for
$225.00. It is signed on the back by Amelia Susan Palmer, Lydia Palmer
Palmer and Elizabeth Palmer, and dated "1852 the year."
- cemetery records, Washington Co MD,Vol. V, Manor Church Graveyard, near
Tilghmanton, page 37.
- from Family Tree Maker: a reference to marriage of Lydia Ann Shouse,
daughter of John Shouse and Mary Welty: Lydia Ann Shouse b. July 1850 in
Washington Co MD
- 1860 federal census, Ogle Co IL, listing for William Baker residence,
includes Phillip Shouse, farm laborer, age 23? Guessing he was a son of Mary
Welty and John Shouse or perhaps a nephew? In the 1900 census, Mt. Morris
twp., Ogle Co, Phillip Shouse is listed as a boarder in the boarding house of
Jessie Bollinger. He was born Mar. 8, 1838 in MD, is age 62, single, father
born in VA; mother born in MD; no occupation given.

3. Lydia Welty m. William Baker. See above.

Also, there is a Susan Welty, wife of Jacob Hiestand [he was b. in Lancaster
Co Pa and died 1835] listed in the Portrait and Biographical Album of Ogle
Co, 1886. She came to Ogle Co 1842 w/son also named Jacob, and a daughter.
Suspect she may have been the Susanna Welty, daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth
Sheller, who married Jacob Heistand.

Would appreciate any more information on Anna Sheller and John Welty. Does
anyone have a will for John Welty? Suspect he may have been one of the
children of Jacob and Elizabeth Sheller, but not able to confirm that.
