Tom, did Rebecca have any daughters she could have gone to live with? Sometimes
that happened and widows were buried close to where they passed away. Or they
remarried - then I would check the marriage records in the Courthouse. In the
Methodist Episcopal Church Graveyard in Clearspring there is a gravestone for
William S. Speck, s/o David and Rebecca Speck age 3 y 1m 14 d. died 7 January 1861.
David's is in Volume III and this one is listed in Volume II. There are 6 Speck
grooms in the marriage index which goes to 1860 (including David). Brides include
Ann, Catherine, Elizabeth and Mary. In the Estate Distributions there is a
Christian Speck who is an heir to John Cushwa circa 1808. Rebecca Stouffer is not
mentioned in the Stouffer estate distributions.

That pretty much exhausts my resources here unless you want the marriages listed.

Sorry I can't be of more help. You should go to the list and ask for a check of
the other cemetery books (there are 5 or 6) besides Vol. II and III to see if she is
buried in the county elsewhere.

It may also be that she is buried beside him and there isn't a stone. I found such
an instance in my family through the cemetery records. There are all kinds of
reasons - people couldn't afford it, it got forgotten etc. What you get from the
cemetery books is a list of the stones that were read in 1935. If the church
records exist, you may find more. I don't know anything about Church of the
Brethren records - I don't think they kept parish records or registers according to
the research guide I purchased, but I don't know if they would have recorded
marriages and deaths etc.

I'd ask the question on the listserv to see if anyone can tell you about the
Brethren. They may have had a church newspaper or something of that nature which
recorded that sort of information. I will be watching to see if someone else can
help with that information - I would like to know more about them.

A last thought - if you have a Bible do you have Rebecca's death date? If it is
after 1913, you may have a death certificate with the State of Maryland. I think
that is the date after which vital records were kept in Maryland. That should tell
you where she is interred, who her parents were, where they were born etc. OR did
she die before David? That is another whole ball of wax, isn't it???
