Carol,
Thank you so much for the great information on Rev. Kurtz. That's a great help on researching William Stewart and Elizabeth Watts.

>Rev. Benjamin Kurtz was a Lutheran minister. According to Scharf's History of Western Maryland, Vol. II, pages 1246-1251, he was the pastor at St. Paul's Church in Clear Spring from 1816-1825. St. Paul's housed both the Lutheran and German Reformed congregations. "Mr. Kurtz was for many years editor of the Lutheran Observer. . . also the founder of the Missionary Institute at Selin's Grove, PA. He died Dec. 29, 1865, in Baltimore, in his seventy-first year."

Also, same source, p. 1088-1089: Rev. Benjamin Kurtz, D.D., became pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church, Hagerstown, in 1815. He was the minister for 16 years, also supplying the congregations at Funkstown, Williamsport, Beard's and Smithsburg. During his ministry, preaching in English began. From 1815-1827 he was in Europe to secure assistance for Gettysburg Theological Seminary. Upon his return in 1827, he resumed his position at St. John's until 1831.
