Tammie, I just returned from Hagerstown and saw your note. You got many
great replies. Here my 5 cents. I live in Ohio and it is a 5 hour trip so my
time is important and costly. I stay at the Hampton Inn ($75 with AARP) on
us40 just east of the center of town right on the road to the resources. One
the best is the Western Maryland Room the man there knows every book in the
building, if not the town. Just ask him, I find it saves time and he we pile
books in front of you. He loves is job. There are files with other peoples
research. The down side is it has to be Thursday and Friday to find it open
two days in a row. The Washington County Free Library same building( free
parking south side of building) has the best and oldest newspaper files. It
take days to cover years of info. The Torch was the paper of record and
reprinted all the small town articles for all of Washington Co. which was
first Frederick Co. These two sources have way over 20 books on Marriages,
Cemeteries, and church books. Now some people like the Washington Hist.
Society. I do not, anymore, they got into politics and hired a new college
grad and then pushed out the older lady who had 40 years of info. Now you
are on your own. tom

Subject: [MDWASHIN] Wash Co Research Trip
I'm planning my first trip this Thursday to research my Bowers, Domer, Avey
and Boteler lines. I have many of them in Washington Co. (and some in
Frederick Co.) as far back as the mid-1700's. Does anyone have any
suggestions on
where I should go first? I am hoping to get several day trips in this
summer
(I'm from Harrisburg, PA, about 1 1/2 to 2 hours away).
I know I'm sounding pretty lost in this request but I just quit working for
the summer and haven't had a chance to do much research this past year. I
do
have quite a bit of info but have never been to Maryland. I have been to
several historical societies and courthouses in PA, along with our state
library,
so I am fairly familiar with the research process but look for any other
suggestions. Also, is there anything "different" about how Maryland is set
up?
Thanks for the info and sorry for rambling.
Tammie
