Gordon,
I think you have found the answer to my NOT finding an oath for Adam
RUTTER and why I DID find the oath for all the other Washington and Charles
County, Maryland RUTTERS.
I suspect the RUTTERS, in the early years, were one of the non-combat
religions (Quakers, Mennonites, etc.) Adam was the only one found on any of
the Rev War Service Rolls. Yet, I find him living along side the other RUTTER
families in Virginia. He marries (don't know when/where) a Hannah and they have
a daughter, Susannah who marries Michael HAYMAKER, the son of the renown Adam
HAYMAKER in Winchester, Frederick Co., VA where he dies in 1807. The will
lists only one child. I highly suspect he was married before and this Hannah
marriage was a late in life thing as she goes on to live many years after he
passes.
The question becomes-where were Hannah and Adam married, was there
another wife and family before the marriage to Hannah and why he was the only
RUTTER who joined the war and did not (it appears) take the fidelity oath. Was he
connected to the RUTTER men who DID take the oath in Maryland?
Thanks again for the "light bulb" moment---------Now only more to
ponder.
Best regards,
Chocy
