Subject: THANKS! Re: Jacob's church, near Leitersburg
Date: Mon, 28 Jun 2004 15:05:20 -0700 (PDT)

Hi,

I just wanted to offer a public note of thanks to all
who helped me with this inquiry about Jacob's Church.

I made a detour from my Indiana-Maine trip to go
through Leitersburg yesterday, and sadly, couldn't
find the cemetery for Jacob's church. However, I did
find the graves of my g-g-g-g-grandfather, James
Swailes (1788-1878) and his wife Catharine (Reecher)
Swailes (1795-1881) in the cemetery behind St. Paul's
church. I think that my g-g-g-grandfather, Lewis
Ritter (ca. 1818-1873, married Margaret Swailes
[1820-1910], ca. 1841) may have his parents in the
Jacob's church cemetery and may have even been married
in this church. MD State Archives had been unable to
find any Ritter-Swailes marriage record.

Would anyone has information on the Ritter/Swailes
families in the Leitersburg/Waynesboro area, as far a
Lewis Ritter or Margaret Swailes is concerned? I know
that Margaret's father James appears in an old book on
the history of Leiterburg, and there is a Ritter
family in the area descended from a Jacob or Tobias
Ritter, but thus far, I haven't been able to find a
connection between this family and my Lewis Ritter,
although it seems likely.

Anyhow, thanks again to all for all your help!

Best,

Joe Price
