Shirley, most of my sources are pretty early but there were a few Sands
sightings:

In Morrow and Morrow's Marriage Index for Washington County 1799-1860
there are these grooms:

SANDS, Wm./Ann M. CAMPBELL 1/18/1855
also:
SANDS, Geo. W./Ann Marie CRONISE 8/17/1821
SANDS, Rob./ Hen. L. KING 9/9/1860

From
The Torchlight
August 28, 1828
"Married Thurs 16th by Rev. KURTZ (Lutheran minister) George W. SANDS to
Miss Ann Maria CRONISE all of this Co."
July 27, 1824
"George W. Sands, Hagers-town, offers reward for apprentice to
shoemaking business, Jonathan Neill, about 15 years of age, 4 feet 8-10
inc, impudent, worthless fellow."

The Maryland Herald
"George BRENDEL offers reward for apprenetice to the boot and
shoe-making bus., named Thomas SANDS, aged 18-19 yrs."

I also found some SANTZ burials in the Smithsburg Cemetery. I don't
know if there's any connection - just am making you aware they could be
pronounced the same and they're out there. There are some entries
around 1808 in the newspapers for a Hugh SANDS. If you want those, let
me know.

There are no SANDS entries in estate distributions1778-1835, and nothing
in Vol. II and III of the Cemetery Records.

Good hunting,
Lauren Brantner
