Lauren and Tom~
Thanks so much for your ideas. We plan to be in MD for research in mid September. Will try the Hagerstown Library. Is it the only one in the town or if others, how do I distinguish the correct one. I'm not on Ancestry .Com.
Lauren, how do I access the obit records you mentioned? I am not familiar with them.
We are looking for an obit or mention of death for John E. CHAMBERS of Clearspring. The date is 31 October 1871. He was a boatman on the C&O Canal. We realize that obits with the exception of the people of better means were rare in those days. "Word of Mouth" and the church pulpit were the usual way of passing the news around. Also, imagine literacy may have been an issue. His sons were illiterate until after the Civil War when they pursued their educations, one entering the Law and another a career US Navel Officer. Have hopes there might be a mention of him (the father) someplace.

You might ask if anyone on the list has Ridenour's Obit Locator for a
specific person you are looking for. They can then tell you when and
where an obit was published. I don't have it, or I'd do a lookup for you.
