Speakers & Presentations

Robert W. Barnes, Sr., M. Ed., F.M.G.S
has been researching Maryland families since 1960. He has published
numerous books and articles. His most recent book is Maryland Marriage
Evidences,
1634-1718. He is a Reference Archivist at the Maryland State Archives and
is on
the editorial staff of the Maryland Historical Press.
Presentation: Migration Between Maryland and Virginia in the 17th and Early
Centuries
Joyce Browning
is a graduate of the UNC and resident of Reston, Virginia. Joyce Browning
has authored genealogical and historical articles and books, surname
newsletters, and is currently engaged in transcribing Fairfax County
records. She has
addressed historical/genealogical societies including the Virginia
Genealogical Society. For her, the content of this conference is deeply
personal.
Presentation: Sunlight on the Chesapeake
Sandra MacLean Clunies, CG
is a professional genealogist, author, and lecturer. She serves on the
Board of Directors of the Association of Professional Genealogists (APG),
and is
President of its National Capital Area Chapter. She is Historian of the
Chesapeake Chapter of the U.S. Lighthouse Society, co-author of Hatteras
Families:
Oral and Family Histories, and a member of the Faculty of the Institute of
Genealogy and Historical Research (IGHR) at Samford University.
Presentation: Early Lighthouse Keeper Families of Maryland and Virginia
Tom Magnuson, M.A.
earned his BA and MA in American History at San Jose State University, did
post-graduate work at both the Naval Post Graduate School and Duke
University, and is currently a Visiting Scholar at the University of North
Carolina. He
is the founder and CEO of the Trading Path Association (TPA).
Presentation: Into the Backcountry: Emigration Southwest from the
Chesapeake
in the 17th Century
Tim Pinnick
is a lecturer and family historian with 17 years overall research
experience. He is the creator and webmaster of the African American Coal
Miner
Information Center, editor of the African American Coal Mining Heritage
newsletter,
and recipient of a 2005-2006 Formby Research Fellowship to conduct research

in the Southwest Collection, Texas Tech University.

Elissa Scalise Powell, CGRS
is a member of the Faculty of IGHR at Samford University. She is the
Western Pennsylvania Genealogical Society Book Review Editor, and a Director

cemetery
book series, a contributing author to many publications including
Genealogical Computing & appeared on the PBS-TV show "Ancestors 2."
Presentation: How Did My Pennsylvania Ancestor Get There?: Migration Trails

Craig R. Scott, M.A., CGRS
is a professional genealogist, author, and lecturer. He is a member of the
faculty of IGHR
at Samford University. Craig is President and CEO of Heritage Books, Inc.,
is on the Board of Directors of APG, MGS and VGS, and has appeared on PBS.

is a staff writer for The Washington Post and the author of five previous
books. He writes a monthly science column for National Geographic magazine

has been a commentator on National Public Radio's Morning Edition. He will

be speaking on his newest book, The Grand Idea: George Washington's Potomac
and the Race to the West.

>From Route 15 north: Follow 15 north to Motter Avenue exit. Turn right
onto
Motter/Opossumtown Pike. Travel one mile and turn left at second entrance

FCC. Turn left into the parking lot. The theater is located inside the Fine

>From Baltimore: Follow I-70 from Baltimore to Frederick. Exit onto Route
15
north.
>From Washington: Follow I-270 northwest from Washington to the junction
with
