John~
The map and web site is quite interesting. I tried the search engine but came up nil for Greenspring Furnace, Indian Springs, C&O Canal, and John CHAMBERS. I know they were in Washington County in 1859 but perhaps did not purchase land as yet. Hon. Geo. CHAMBERS & Jos. CHAMBERS heirs are close to Clearspring which is not all that far from Greenspring Furnace or the Canal.
John E. was a boatman. However, the family appears to have lived on their 3 acre farm. A 12 year old twin daughter, Anastasia, drowned in 1868 at Four Locks. She was at the lock keepers house (FLYNN) family at the time of the accident.
Interesting that another CHAMBERS lived in that area in a similar time line. Wonder if there was a link unknown to us. Family has always wondered why they would leave New England to go to MD. Perhaps more family i.e. the above mentioned.

Mary Ellen,
I found a web site that might show what you want. Go to:
http://mdslavery.net/html/mapped_images/wamap.html
Click on "Interactive Maps", move your curser over the interactive map of
Maryland on what appears to be an "appendix" like part of Maryland hanging
down along the Potomac River reddish in color. You should find a map
reference to the "Hon. Geo. Chambers". Is he related to your John E.
Chambers?
Good Luck
John

Just got back from a wonderful ( with the exception of yesterday morning), 4
day trip to Washington and Allegany County, MD. We had terrific weather,
almost 60 degrees. Then the snow hit yesterday morning.
Anyway, we drove over to Four Locks, Indian Springs, Hagerstown seeking
data on my husband's g grandfather John E. CHAMBERS. The family home until
1880 was across from Greenspring Furnace Post Office. We saw a road with
that name but it appeared to us to be out of place from other family
landmarks. We drove around and along Rt. 56, Fort Fredrick which is closed
for the season.
John E. and his wife Anastasia nee LYNCH CHAMBERS were a boatman family on
the C&O Canal. They had a home on 3 acres of land in Indian Springs
District across from the above mentioned Post Office. One of their twin
daughters Anastasia drowned a Four Locks in 1868. She was visiting the
FLYNN family per the newspaper article.
Would anyone on the list have any thoughts where this might have been in
the 1870s?
