1. The primary source for death records in Maryland cities in the 1850s is the respective church registers of deaths and burials. For a list of all the old churches in Hagerstown and the available registers, see page 10 of the Washington County, Maryland, Genealogical Research Guide, which is available for only $13 from Catoctin Press, POBox 505, New Market MD 21774-0505.
2. A secondary source was the notices of death published in the local newspaper. Early published abstracts are listed on page 21 of the Guide, but do not cover deaths as late as the 1850s.
2. Rural burials were often made in family farm graveyards, even if the family was a church member.
3. The Washington County 1830 Census did not list any Munson, Munsee, or Muntzer household. There were seven Startzman households listed.
