In History of Western Maryland, by J. Thomas Scharf ,(1882) on page 574
under heading Middletown District,No. 3 " Middletown takes its name from
the fact that it is midway between Frederick and Boonsboro. It is situated
between the Catoctin and Blue Ridge Mountains, in the beautiful and fertile
Middletown Valley, and is on the old national pike, eight miles west of
Frederick City, and one mile from the Catoctin Creek. .....THOMAS POWELL was
the first blacksmith..."
Another reference..on page 984,,,as one of the principal grants prior to
1800; " The First Choice....granted to THOMAS POWELL Feb 15,1756 212 acres"
Another reference , on page 1222, listing in cemetery that was located near
to Williamsport, Md. " THOMAS POWELL, died Oct. 9, 1849, aged 61 yrs.; and
his wife died July 31, 1831, aged 47 years.
Another reference, on page 432..." THOMAS POWELL, SR. Will proven before
1748 . The wills were in Prince's George's County and there recorded, but on
the erection of Frederick copied into the will book of the latter"

Subject: [MDWashin] New to List _ Powell

I am looking for a Thomas Powell that has been identified on the 1850
Antrim, Franklin Co., PA census. He may have come from Md as it is listed
on later census' containing his children as fathers birthplace. I looked at
a map on the rootsweb site and there was a Powell Mountain, Could this be
the same family???? Thomas must have died before 1860 as he is not on the
census. I was able to track some of the family from this point forward, but
this is only my own. I dont know what happened to the rest of the Powell's
after 1860 or who they were before 1850. Any help is greatly appreciated.
