Replying to Murrow Morris, query of 21 May 2000:

I assume this is the prominent Methodist preacher, Hope Hull, who as far as I know is best reported in the journal of Lorenzo Dow (also titled History of Cosmopolite, in some editions). Dow was converted under Hull's preaching, I think in Connecticut; and later ran into him at the first camp-meeting he ever attended, in the vicinity of Augusta GA in 1803. Dow himself became a leading early advocate of camp-meetings, introducing them to New England, and to England itself, among many other places.

A lot of people (mostly Methodists) named their male babies Hope Hull (and a lot more named them Lorenzo Dow). I believe the town of Hope Hull, Alabama is also named after him.
