If your grandfather was a second generation American then I doubt if we are from the same family line. My Givan ancestors were documented in Maryland and Virginia in the late 1600's. In addition my family had left Maryland by 1825 for Indiana. I believe some of the other Givan lines went to Tennesse, Missouri and Texas.
I am aware from my research that a number of Irish families came over in the mid 1800's (driven by the Potato Famine and the miserable economic conditions of Ireland) and I would guess that you come from one of those families. There is a small village called Dungivan in County Derry, Ireland. I believe the early Givan immigrant's were primarily Protestant (or at least converted once they got here for convenience) and the later Givan immigrants were mostly Catholic.
Sorry, the facts don't seem to fit. Good luck. Talk to you Aunt and get what she knows before it is too late. She will be your best starting place for your research.
