Madstones from the innards of a deer (similar to gallstones in humans)
were applied to bites to draw out poison. Once Abraham Lincoln, in
Illinois, sent to Terre Haute, Indiana for a madstone believed to have the
power to do this when one of his boys was bitten. ~~Dixie in Indiana
