I just had to jump in and comment about Nancy's statement about photos!
As a modem user with a 5-year old computer, I wholeheartly support the
"limited" use of photos on the first ("index.html") page, cemetery or
otherwise. Three or four full-sized photos aren't too bad, but the use of
"thumbnail" photos that people can "click on" if they want to view the
larger version is great (in my opinion).
Also, another technique I try to use on the first page is to list topics in
"tables" and if the URL you are going to access has "lots" of photos I will
usually put the word (photos) next to the "clickable" words.
