As simply as I can put it. For many years, many, if not
the majority, of USGenWeb Projects sites have been hosted
on Rootsweb. Rootsweb has since been sold (a couple of
times, actually). Their current parent company (may not
be the right term) is The Generations Network .
(Ancestry).

The banner is acknowledging Rootsweb as our host and
Rootsweb a community of Ancestry. With the link to
Ancestry many feel that with a mission and goal of
providing free genealogical information is lost behind the
brand of a conglomerate. Perception is 9/10 of the law so
to speak.

On the other hand they are a server and while our subject
of genealogy is a shared subject, in the sense of being a
server they are no different than AOL, tripod, geocities
etc. and have instituted the policy to be acknowledged. via the banners.

It is important to remember that USGenWeb Project sites
may be hosted on the server on ones choice.

Tina
