I can tell you what worked for me in Penobscot County.
I got the address of the Probate Court from the BangorLibrary, but I expect
that a service like www.switchboard.com would find it also.
I wrote a snail mail letter specifying what I was looking for. In
Penobscot there is an advantage because Ruth Gray has indexed the files for
the period I was interested in. Because I expected a large job (my
grandmother was under guardianship from age 8 to 18, as her parents had
died) I sent a check for $25 -- I think this would be excessive for a single
normal-size file. (My three files ran to 75 pages both sides).
Try it - but be as specific as possible about name and death date.
