As one goes further back in their searches....one tends to "run into" old names which have
shown up on some lists......copy this and keep it handy.

Keep in mind that Maine was actually part of Massachusetts until 1820 and you will need to find information at the Massachusetts
State Archives in Boston.....look for "Maine Papers" [on line] . Am sure the Maine State Archives will have information but dont know
how far back their information goes.

ARROWSIC ISLAND.....NewTown under Gov. Andros, set off from Georgetown as Arrowsic in 1841

BACK COVE....see Deering (New Hampshire)
BACK RIVER....the tide water west of Dover Neck [New Hampshire] , regional name for Madbury
BAGADUCE...now Castine, Maine
BALL ISLAND...now Rutherford's, South Bristol
BATH.....see Georgetown
BERWICK....Norwichawannock, Unity Parish.....see Kittery
BIDDEFORD, Saco...., so named in 1718 after Bideford Co. Devon England
BLACK POINT (Prout's Neck), Stratton's Island, early regional names for the country between Spurwink and Winter Harbor...see Scarborough
BLOODY POINT, a tax district of Dover (NH), primarily in the point in Newington opposite of Dover Point, became the chief part of Newington.
BLUE POINT.....see Scarbrough
BOILING ROCK.....see Portsmouth (NH) AND Kittery
BRAVEBOAT HARBOR....see Kittery
BRENTWOOD.....see Exeter (NH)
BRIDE HILL....see Hampton(NH), nearest neighborhood to Exeter, Stratham, and Greenland (all NH)
BRISTOL....sundry attempts were made to name a town for Bristol, England...Dover Neck(NH) is marked Bristol on an early map. Mr Maverick called
York "Bristol". The earliest to endure is Bristol on the Massachusetts-Rhode Island frontier. Pemaquid was incorporated as Bristol in 1765.
BROAD BAY...the head of the Muscongus River
BRUNSWICK....Pejepscot and Maquoit, incorporated in 1715 and 1765
CAPE BONAWAGON....Cape Newagen, a fishing station by 1624, apparently the outer point of Southport. In the Kennebec Purchase map of 1765,
the whole length of Southport is marked "Capenaiggen Island".
CAPE ELIZABETH....first a landmark, then a region, then a township including Spurwink, Richmond Island, and Purpooduck.......
See Falmouth and South Portland.
CAPE NEDDICK....a small settlement which Massachsuetts included within the York township
CAPE NEWAGEN.........see Cape Bonawagon
CAPE PORPUS.....a small settlementin early times somewhat tributary to Saco [Winter Harbor] or to Wells. Renamed Arundel in 1717, Kennebunkport
in 1821, yet made 2 towns in 1915.
CAPE PORPUS RIVER...now the Mousam in Kennekunk but rarely applied to a small stream in Cape Porpus
CAPISIC........Falmouth...later Westbrook...then later Deering...now Portland
CASCO BAY......see Portland and Wescuatogo
CASCO RIVER....the Presumpscot, or by some clained to be the Portland Harbor.
CATHANCE.......settlement on Merrymeeting Bay (dont you just love that name!)...now in Bowdoinham
COCHECHO.....the present town of Dover (NH)
COCHECHO POINT...the tip of Dover on Rollinsford side
COLD HARBOR....now Eliot....see Kittery
CONCORD NH.....altered from Rumford, settle as part of Massachusetts at Penacook
CORBIN'S SOUND...the sound east or south of Ocean Point, Boothbay
CORNWALL.......Sagadahoc
CROOKED LANE....see Kittery
CUMBERLAND.....see North Yarmouth ( Maine not Mass.)
CUMBERLAND MILLS..... Ammoncoggin.....see Westbrook
DARMARISCOVE.....Damarelll's Cove
DEERING.....included Back Cove, Stroudwater, Wondford, Morrill's,....set off from Westbrook and later annexed to Portland
DEVONSHIRE....name for Sagadahoc comtemplated by Massachusetts just before New York took possession

DOVER....had been called Hilton's Point, Upper Piscataqua, Bristol, and northam...before it was incorp. as Dover in 1640. It
included what is now Durham, Newington, Somersworth, Rollinsford, Madbury, and Lee....all in NH
DOVER NECK.....site of the pioneer town of Dover, now(?) a farming district (book printed in 1928-32) NH
DOVER POINT.....Hilton Point [NH]
DUNSTAN.....west Scarbrough, named for a hamlet in Yealmpton, Co.Devon, Eng.
DURHAM.....Oyster River.....see Dover [NH]
ELIOT.....set off in 1810....see Kittery
EPPEFORD.......Merryland(now in Wells,Maine), Great Plains, Mousam(now in Kennebunk), names designating the interior of ancient Wells
from the bounds of York eastward.
EPPING..........see Exeter [NH]
EXETER......besides Stratham, was divided into Newfields, Newmarket, Brentwood, Epping, and Freemont [NH]
FALMOUTH......"Casco Bay" lost Cape Elizabeth, Portland , Westbrook, leaving only that part east of the Presumpscot River.
FALMOUTH FORESIDE.....New Casco, the frontage on Casco Bay of modern Falmouth
FORE RIVER.......Portland Harbor
FORE RIVER.....the tide water east of Dover Neck [NH] including the lower Cochecho.
FREEPORT...........see north Yarmouth [Maine not Mass.]
FRESH CREEK....above Cochecho Point [NH]
FRESH RIVER........Exeter [NH]
GEORGETOWN.....as incorp. in 1716, included a new settlement on the Arrowsic Island with unoccupied territory which is now Bath, Woolwich,

GOSPORT..........New Hampshire's part of the Isle of Shoals from 1715 until annexed to Rye. [NH]
GREAT COVE.......Kittery
GREAT ISLAND.........New Castle (Newcastle), for years the commerical and political center of New Hampshire. An early tax district
of Portsmouth; later included north part of the present day Rye; incorp. in 1693 [NH]
GREENLAND....the name that Capt.Champernowne gave his farm, later a tax district of Portsmouth, later made a town
