Announcing a Core Melungeon DNA Project aimed at obtaining DNA results from both male and female descendants of historically recognized people known as Melungeon DNA alone cannot tell us the whole story, but coupled with genealogy, it may show us a new direction in search of our ancestors. Family Tree DNA of Houston has been selected as the testing company.

The participants must descend in a genealogically use line for the appropriate DNA test(s). The males in a father to son to son, etc. line and the females in a mother to daughter to daughter, etc. line. The participants must have prior approval of the administrator. The participants will in most cases be self funding. Scholarships, in full or partial, may be available as funds are raised through donations. A General Fund has been established for this purpose. Loved ones may be memorialized in this manner or a donation can simply be made to further this cause. Donors may remain anonymous if desired.

Participants descending from Gibson, Collins, Goins, Bolin, Bolling, Minor, Mullins, Bunch, Williams, and other historically identified Melungeon surnames are sought for the Core Melungeon DNA Project. Those who have already been tested by Family Tree DNA of Houston may choose to join this project as their second choice now allowed. In some cases they may be upgraded to more markers or receive a Biological Test as new tests become available.
