This is interesting info. It reminds me that for a few years I had wondered
about Albion King Parris, as the name kept showing up in several different
lines I was working on, and had only recently (thanks to Jerry Gower of MGS)
realized that he was one of the early governors of Maine, and yes,
apparently very well respected based on the number of instances I have seen
the name crop up.

I also have noticed the name "Amory Battles" appearing in a couple lines I
have worked on in Bangor, and I believe that he was a well respected
clergyman in town.

Subject: [MEPENOBS] Naming children

Mr. Rowe brought up a good point about given names. It reminded of some
questions I have had for a time about names, and thought I would throw these
out in hopes that someone might have an answer.

Frequently, during the 1800s, it was popular to name children after famous
people. What I have realized in researching family in Maine, that it was
also popular to name children after local 'celebrities.'

For example, George Stillman was a resident of Machias and was a local hero
from the Revolutionary War. When he passed, a number of people named their
sons after him. Albion K. Parris was a lawyer, State politician.
Apparently he was well liked as many children were named for him.

There are a few of these names I have noticed being used, but have been yet
able to find the local celebrity:

Almon
LaForrest
Leon

Would anyone have an idea who the celebrity was, and possibly what their
claim to fame might have been?

Any input much appreciated!
Cheryl
