This information is about my great-grandfather, who also happens to be one of my genealogical "brick walls." Part of the problem I've run into is the fact that he apparently changed the family surname to Nicholas following immigration to North America, which is actually his given name if my research is accurate, so that is the reason his three children are shown with that surname. It is my understanding that is their birth surname, and is the one that appears on any records I have been able to locate. Chevaki Horania Nicholas was my grandmother, and she not only had several given names that she went by over the years but I have evidence of up to SEVEN possible marriages, so that has somewhat tangled the family tree as well.

I have information that they lived in Greenville, Maine, but no other information on it, including location or dates. It was 1898 or earlier, though, because that is when they immigrated to Yukon Territory in Canada. They may have lived in Greenville a bit of time, though, because my grandfather's (their son-in-law) father is also known to have been a seaman living in Maine at one time.

If anyone out there has any information on his parents and/or siblings, I would very much appreciate hearing from you, because I have nothing whatsoever. Also, if you have any information that even MIGHT connect, but is not in complete agreement with what is indicated below, PLEASE let me know anyway because much of the details I have been able to locate is rather fragmented and could be questionable. This has been a brick wall to me for a great many years, so no fragment of information is considered too insignificant.

1. Nicholas John Stametiethis was born about 1856 in Greece. Was reportedly born in Greece, possibly Athens, but this is not confirmed. Year is an approximation, based on his date of death at the age of 61. He lived in Greenville, Piscataquis County, Maine before 1898. Before 1917 he was barber in Dawson City, Yukon Territory, Canada. He died on 23 Dec 1917 in Saint Mary's Hospital, Dawson City, Yukon Territory, Canada. Cause of death is shown as heart trouble, and attending physician was Dr. LaChapelle. Funeral arrangements were at Catholic Chapel. Changed his name to John Nicholas upon immigrating to the United States.
