STETSON — Ellen I. "Nellie" Merrill, 85, died March 29, 2002, at a Pittsfield health care facility following a long illness.
She was born in Rusagonis, New Brunswick, Jan. 5, 1917, the daughter of Frederick and Margaret (Fletcher) Charters. She attended schools in Canada, Levant and Stetson.
Nellie married Ralph N. Merrill in Bangor, April 18, 1934. Ralph died May 25, 2001 They had been married for 67 years.
Nellie loved to crochet and knit for her children and grandchildren. She was a former 4-H leader in Stetson. One of Nellie's hobbies was history, especially the history of Stetson. She wrote the second edition of The History of the Town of Stetson for their Sesquicentiennial.
She is survived by two sons and their wives, Charles and Constance Merrill, and Ralph and Carolyn Merrill Jr., all of Stetson; one daughter and her husband, Shirley and Darrell Eells of Stetson; two sisters-in-law, Carmon Charters of Stetons and Jessie Brann of Grindstone; eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchilren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her brothers, Ralph Charters and Joseph Brann.
Friends may call from 6-8 p.m Sunday, March 31 at the Brown Funeral Home, 34 High St., Newport, where a funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, April 1 with Pastor Al Worden officiating. Burial will follow in the family lot at Clarks Hill Cemtery in Stetson.
