From a piece written by Rosaire MARION, great grandson of John G
MACDOUGAL, and included in 'Our Prairie Heritage (Cambria 1902-1977).

"Marie Elise MACDOUGALL was bornat Lesser Slave Lake in what is now the
Province of Alberta, in 1836. She was the daughter of John George
MACDOUGALL, the first Chief Factor of the Hudson's Bay Company of
Edmonton District, an immigrant of possibly the Hebrides, Scotland and
of, nee Jenny Vandersluys, daughter of a Northwest Company clerk.

Mrs (Elise) MARION'S father died in an accident in the Lesser Slave
Lake district when she was quite young and she and her brothers and
sister and mother were taken to Saint Boniface, where she was educated
and later married Mr. Edward Marion. Mrs. MARION accompanied Mr MARION
on his fur trading journeys on the prairies in Red River carts."

The scrip & other records of Marie-Elise show her mother as being
Genevieve (Jennie) (JASPER) GASPARD.
Is it a possibility that Jennie was born Vandersluys and married Mr
GASPARD after John George MACDOUGALL died. But then the mother's
maiden name is always listed on the records so that wouldn't follow.
But maybe the above will give you some place to start looking.
