Subject: [METISGEN-L] I have a neat story & Marion question? OT
Date: Thu, 1 Apr 2004 23:05:00 -0500 (EST)

Hello Cousins and Friends. Thought i would share this story with you all.....just a reminder about how small this world we live in really is.

Also....there is a MARION question here as well.

I'll try to keep this a short story.

Here in Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast, BC....last summer [2003], i had my phone disconnected for a short period of time ....i reserved my phone number for when i had it re-installed....when i went to have it hooked back up again....it was discovered that my phone number had inadvertantly been given away...oh well, such is life....i received a new phone number.

About two weeks ago....two friends of mine struck up a conversation with a lady they had parked beside....as they were all getting out of thier cars at the same time...my friend Max Morin, who is very friendly and very Cree, from Sask., thought the woman looked Aboriginal and asked her if she was First Nations. As they talked....she said she believed she was Metis, but did not know much of her ancestry. So, Max told her he had a friend named Brenda Menard [me] that played around with a bit of Metis genealogy searches.

The woman said "Brenda Menard....i know of her....i keep getting phone calls for her....i guess when i moved here last year....i got her old phone number....people keep calling my house for her and her family".

They talked some more and my friends asked her [her name is Debra] where she lived....it was discovered she lives 5 doors down from me....less then 60 seconds from my front door.
She asked my friends if i could please call her....easy enough to do as she has my old phone number.

Finally, i had some time and gave her a call. She told me she gets many calls still for me and my sons'....confusing in that we both have son's named Dylan....so, someone phones for Dylan...she hands it to her son....it ends up being the wrong Dylan....my Dylan.

We talked about genealogy and she was curious to find out if she was truly of Metis ancestry.

She came over to my house yesterday and brought me what family names she has.

With the names she provided me....i went and did a few quick searches....i sent a query off to Metisgen and one to MRC. I recieved a reply back from MRC and some familiar sounding surnames.

I poked around a bit more and into Scrip records.

To my surprise....this womans father, Mederic LAURIER, is the s/o..... [1]Antoinette DAUPHINAIS and Adelard LAURIER m. Oct 29, 1935 in Laurier, MB.

[1] Antoinette DAUPHINAIS is the d/o [2] Mederic DAUPHINAIS and Lucie-Marie DESLAURIERS. They were m. c 1912 in Starbuck, MB.
Lucie Marie DESLAURIERS is the d/o Pierre DESLAURIERS and Marie-Rose MARION.

[2] Mederic DAUPHINAIS is the s/o [3] Alexis Genthon Dit DAUPHINAIS b. ca 1840 and *Philomene CARRIERE b. Oct 1847 St. Boniface, MB.

Government of Canada Files

3 Reference: RG15 , Interior , Series D-II-8-a , Volume 1320 , Reel C-14926 , Access code: 90
File Title: Scrip affidavit for Dauphinais, Philomene; wife of Alexis Dauphinais; born: Oct. 1847; father: Andre Carriere (Mtis); mother: Marianne Rivard (Mtis); claim no.: 1136; scrip no.: 10080; date of issue: Aug. 20, 1876; amount: $160
Finding Aid number: 15-19

*Philomene CARRIERE is a 1st [first] cousin of my gr grandmother Marie CARRIERE...and 'my' 1st cousin 3 times removed.

Debra, the woman i just met yesterday, is the gr gr grandaughter of Philomene CARRIERE...which makes Debra my 5th cousin, i believe.

What a small world!!!

I'm trying to locate any information on these families and of Marie Rose MARION....I can not locate Marie Rose MARION.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time.

Brenda M.
