Dear Mayor Michael Hurley
It was with great distress that I learned that the destruction of vital
records in Belfast is being entertained. I am not aware of what would
require that such valuable artifacts be obliterated, but I strongly object.
My family came "over the pond" in the 1600's. Since that time Belfast and
her surrounding towns have been populated with my Copelands, Voses, Rowells,
Whittens, Wiggins, Shaws, Austins, Carey/Carys, Simmons, and
Steward/Stewarts. Many have lived and died in Waldo County. Some died as
Sons of Maine in the Civil War, WWI, WWII, and the Vietnam War.
Although I live in Texas, my family visits Maine for vacation. My family
comes for the camping and fishing. I come for the genealogy. I visit the
city halls, homeplaces, graveyards, and seek to document the history of my
forebears.
I believe there are many others like me who spend good American dollars in
Belfast to save this history. Please advocate for the preservation of the
treasures in your vital records.
Best Regards, Maryfrances Stewart
