The Civil War pension is for Caroline's widow's pension claim through her first husband, Charles H Stevens, my 3rd Great Grandfather. He died in the 1870s in FL and the family was claiming that he returned from service in a sickly condition from which he never recovered, which should have made Caroline eligible for a pension. She ended up fighting for it for around 20 years and left a paper-trail of over 200 pages. Included in the file is an affadavit by Albert Norton and that is the only paper that includes anything, indirect as it is, about her mother. Albert is Frances' son by her second husband, who you and others from the list, have identified for me as being Henry Norton, also of Lincolnville. Albert was born around 1846 and while I found him on the 1850 census in MA living with Frances, Caroline, and other Heal (shown as Hield) and Norton relations, I haven't found he and Frances in subsequent census schedules yet. Also, Henry does
not appear with the family in 1850 so it looks like he must have died prior to that census, making Frances a widow for the second time.
Isn't it funny how solving one mystery ends up opening a whole new can of worms? I started out looking for Caroline's parents, and now not only do I have their names but now there are several other leads to follow; siblings, half siblings, what happened to Henry Norton, etc etc etc. Fun stuff!

Whose Civil War pensions records do you have? Is it for the John Heal who
married Frances Morris? No, I have his death as 1840, which must be from a
gravestone. I'll see if I have a photo of the stone. I have that she
married 2] 10 Jan. 1841 to Henry Norton, married by Ingraham Duncan, Esq. I
have from the census, what you apparently have. There was a female born 1830
to 1835. There is a Mary Jane Heal that I haven't found parents for; Male
born 1825 to 1830; Male born 1830 to 1835, Caroline S. Heal born 13 Nov.
1838; Elbridge Heal, born ca 1839, who was aged 11 years old in 1850, living
in the household of Gideon town and wife, Frances (Heal) Tower. I have the
1840 Census of Frances, a female 30 to 40 years, with the children mentioned
above. Have you found anything relating to Henry Norton? I don't recall
any more, but as I've written before, I haven't worked on this for some
time, and when I was working on it, I was looking for facts of all
Lincolnville Heals. God bless, Isabel

Thanks very much for the responses. There were also 18 Heal households in
Lincolnville in 1840, with at least 8 of them having girls under 5.
Initially I ran a search looking for John but this morning I remembered that
there's a paper in the Civil War pension claim for my subject, Caroline
(Heal) Stevens, that points to a second marriage for her mother Francis. The
page was from an Albert Norton who said he was Caroline's half brother.
That
made me think that perhaps John died earlier than I thought and when I went
back to ancestry.com today I ran a search for Heal households in Waldo
County and there she was. Frances Heal in Lincolnville, spelled differently
than the one record that I have of her existence, but with 3 boys all under
15, one girl under 5, and herself under 40. No adult male living with them.
So far this fits in pretty well with what little info I had already
obtained, but made me wonder about the inheritance laws in Maine at the
time. If Frances was already a widow by the 1840 enumeration, and is in fact
head of the household at that time, does this mean that she inherited her
husband's estate outright? Or could she have been designated as guardian
for
her eldest son, rather than a male relation? How can I persue the events
that would have occurred following John's death if all I know is that he
must have died sometime between 1836 and 1840?
Thanks all for your feedback!

For the record, the census for Maine has always been categorized as
Maine. Also, Maine became separated from Massachusetts in 1820,
Waldo County incorporated on February 27, 1827 with Lincolnville
included in the lists of towns. Prior to that Lincolnville would
have been in Lincoln County.
