I have dealt with hundreds of marriages & intentions in the 1700's in New
England while doing research for my next book and during this time, if a
couple resided in different towns, marriage intentions were almost always
filed in the groom's hometown, with the marriage ocurring in the bride's
hometown. Sometimes the marriage ocurred in his hometown, or with intentions
filed in both towns - but these were the exceptions and filing intentions in
both towns was in no way mandatory. And, quite often only intentions can be
found, the marriage record has either disappeared, or for some unknown
reason, has been recorded in a third town we haven't thought of looking
into.
